| Although form and title suggest an entryway, this construction does not lead anywhere. However, Arch creates two distinct worlds: the world inside the wooden elements, and the one outside of this frame. According to the position of the viewer, this inside world can grow or diminish, and other sculptures can be perceived as inside or outside of the frame. In this installation, Mademoiselle Pogany III can visually fuse with Arch to become one work, or the two works can coexist independently.
The Arensbergs, collectors who donated this and other works by the artist to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, were the last to have installed small objects on the base of Arch. As historical photos show, these small sculptures were both supported and framed by the wooden structure. |
