At the edge where black linen meets white wall, some of the most important information about this work is gathered: not only is it a drawing – a form defined by cut lines – it is a drawing made from the materials of easel painting, including paint, linen and staples. The staples do not attach linen to stretcher bars as in an easel painting; instead, the linen of Pacific Judson Murphy is attached directly to the walls of the room it occupies. The room itself is implicated in the makeup of the drawing as the viewer moves through the space.

Brancusi’s sculpture in this gallery stresses specific qualities of Serra’s drawing, particularly how it absorbs light and responds to the viewer’s movements.*
